What diving mask do you recommend me?

This is one of the most common questions faced by the shopkeepers in diving stores, especially asked by those who are learning to dive: what scuba mask should I buy? What diving mask do you recommend me?

Below we are going to try to give you some tips for when you decide to buy a diving mask and show you what are the options that exist today in the market so you can decide which to buy having some more information. We will provide you some links to buy them directly if you want.

Choosing the mask is not a minor issue. Good diving mask are not cheap, and even if you choose a great and very expensive mask, made with the best materials, it may be not the good one for you. Diving as the guy pictured above is not comfortable. The goal of diving is not to spend half of the dive emptying your mask: the diving mask is a very important element in the diving equipment and is probably the element that causes more problems to divers.

What is the best scuba diving mask? In my opinion the best mask is the one you don't have to touch underwater and with which you are comfortable and forget about it once you enter the water. For some it may be the latest € 100 model but for others it may be an old mask used by his father. There is no ideal diving mask model, but there is an ideal model for you.

Most experienced divers have tried several diving masks until they have found THE diving mask (and those who have lost it or broke it do really miss that perfect mask). If water floods constantly your mask it will ruin the dive. If it fogs the moment you get underwater it will be an almost useless dive. If you get hurt by the mask you'll have to end the dive.

How do I try a diving mask on?

Usually the diving shop clerk will tell you to try the mask and inhale through your nose, if the mask fixes to the face they will tell you “that is your mask”. This universal test only shows that the mask seals well in the surface and that it MAY be your size, but there are many more factors that will tell you whether or not it is your mask, do not rely only in that simple test. Not all diving mask are designed and manufactured the same way or have the same features. Divers are not equal nor do they dive the same way or use the mask for the same purposes.

The first step is to find out what materials the diving mask is made of. The glass of the mask must be made of tempered glass because it is much more difficult to scratch and fog. You can easily find masks with plastic glasses, do not buy a mask with plastic glasses. They last shorter, the vision will usually not be clear and they will constantly fog. This masks are ok for your children for snorkeling at the beach, but not for diving.

Then look in the mask skirt (the part that attaches to your face) and what material it is made of. This skirt has to be made of silicone and not plastic as it last much less and more water fill in (each manufacturer gives a different name to the silicone they use, just make sure it's silicone). When you try on the mask make sure the silicone bends and sits firmly both your forehead and in your cheekbones. Also check that the bottom of the mask is not too close the lips. Remember, you'll have the regulator while diving and it will modify the shape and position of your mouth. In fact I recommend you do this exercise, if you are at a store simulate that you are wearing a regulator and make sure the silicone fits perfectly to you face and there is filling.

 aqui

If the silicone sits well on your face and does not bother you in the mouth it's time to put the strap behind the head. Now you should make sure the silicone does not touch the line where your hair starts in the forehead and the straps do not touch or hurt your ears. Now breathe with the nose again and pay attention to the bridge and the base of your nose. If you notice that the mask touches you is quite possible that while you're diving water pressure will hurt and bother you a lot, if so this is not your mask.

If the mask does not hurt you bridge or at the base of the nose it's time to move to the next step. Now equalize, just as you would when you're diving. Most people equalize by using the Valsalva maneuver. If it's your case pinch your nose and equalize, if you do it well, if you get properly to pinch both nostrils, continue, if not, test another mask. Another aspect that you should look at this time is the amount of air in the mask: the less air, the clearer vision you should have, the easier you will equalize and faster you will unflood it.

As a last step, look around! That is what the diving mask is for after all, right? Look both ways, up and down. If you can see correctly, have a good field of view and feel comfortable then go ahead, you know that this is your mask.

Related to your sight, if you routinely use contact lenses to dive maybe you can be interested in buying a diving mask that allows you to change its glasses for prescription lenses (it is very annoying to wear contact lenses and have problems with it while diving).

A couple of final recommendations on the diving mask test and that also affect the price. You can try on the mask in the store and then buy it on their own online diving equipment store (many have both stores) or directly from an online diving shop. You will usually find greater discounts. So you can also try them at home with the regulator you use to dive and if does not fit well you can take it back without going back to the store.

What mask should I buy?

Okay, we now know how to try the mask on but... which one is best for me? Which one should I choose among the 100 diving mask available in store knowing that there are about 7 different types of masks for scuba diving (several more for professional divers) that differ in price, quality of materials, field of vision or type of diving? Yes, 20 years ago there were no so many choices and there only existed THE diving mask, today there are almost as many types as flavors of gum, so we will try to show you the different types of the most common diving masks and two recommendations for each type.

One window masks

These masks have a single glass providing a wider field of view than the double window mask and have the advantage that they do not have union of the two glasses so they will not hurt the bridge of your nose. Older models had a lot of space between the face and the glass thus had less clear vision and emptying it was much more difficult but the ones manufactured today usually have very little air space.

Double window masks

Double window masks are probably the most popular among divers mainly because there is more variety and usually have less space between the glass and the eyes, improving vision and clarity and being very easy and are quick to unflood. Besides, their glasses can usually be changed (although not on all models) for prescription lenses. Lately the micromasks are becoming more popular for scuba diving as they have minimum air volume. Those who have tried it say they won't go back.

Masks with extended field of view

These masks can be of one or two tear-shaped windows that provide a wider field of view. Usually the lenses can also be exchanged for prescription lenses.

Masks with purge valve

It could seem that diving masks with purge valves are pretty useless because the clearing mask maneuver that you learnt the first day of the diving course is quite simple but, as we said, in the world of the scuba diving masks there is a place for every need and type of diving. These masks have a purge system under the nose (in some it is located in the cheek) which enables fast clearing of the mask when filled with water. There are some divers who use them for underwater photography, quite useful when spending a lot of time in the same position waiting for the right moment to take the picture, but it is not a mask you will very often see when you go diving.

Frameless mask

The frameless masks are also becoming very popular for its extremely small weight, little space between the window and your eyes, its flexibility and that can put them in any pocket, which makes them very useful as backup masks. They are also very comfortable and hydrodynamic masks.

Data Mask

Finally, for the recreational scuba diver, there is the data mask, masks which incorporates the dive computer and allow you view all your dive-related data directly in the mask, in an LCD screen, when looking down slightly. Air pressure, depth, time... The main benefits of that mask is that your hands are free for your camera or lights without looking at the computer on your wrist, the downside is the price, about 10 times more expensive than any extraordinary scuba diving mask.
